Editor’s Notes for June 2000

Summertime at Pif-Central is always more insane than anticipated! We’ve had storms, hackers, loads of submissions, new staff to find, and more on our minds. Thanks for all the concern over our site crash, but we’re pleased to say we’re back online now. As our site grows and our impressions increase, unforeseen dilemmas continue to arise, but thankfully, our tech team is as good as they come!

Part of our growth is due to critical attention we’ve received over the last few weeks. This month PifMagazine.com was ranked number sixteen in Writer’s Digest’s "50 Best Markets for Short Stories" (June 2000). Writer’s Digest commended Pif as "a showcase for quality poetry and short fiction by new and emerging writers." Also, in its Best of the Web issue (May 2000), Writer’s Digest recognized Pilot-Search.com as being among the best and most useful literary search engines. Writer’s Digest emphasized Pilot-Search’s "more than 11,000 writing links," applauding its variety of categories "from anthologies to zines, views and MFA programs." Read more about the press we’re receiving.

Pif is looking forward to publishing several good issues this fall, including a Science Issue and an Out of Print Books Issue. Correspondingly, we need specialized submissions:

  • Memoirs - especially for the Science issue
  • Opinion Essay by an agent or publisher on why books go out of print (for October’s Out-of-Print issue)
  • Interviews with authors or other publishing folk of interest (in particular an interview with Jeanette Winterson or William Gass or another author/ rare books collector of interest)
  • Fiction and Poetry for September’s Science Issue (this does not mean science fiction – we’re still more interested in character and form than plot)
  • Hypertexts (fiction, poetry, etc.)
  • Animated cover art (GIF, JPEG, Flash, etc.)
  • Commentary that uses hyperlinks, audio, and video

For details on how to submit, see our Submissions Page.

Now, as always, it's time now sit back, grab a cup of your favorite blend, and enjoy this issue of Pif.
