Editor’s Notes for July 2000

Greetings from Lacey, Washington! Structurally we have some changes to report. Richard Luck is stepping down from the Managing Editor position in order to devote himself more completely to his favorite aspect of the magazine — its technical development. Correspondingly, he is now our Technical Director. We're thrilled to announce that Jen Bergmark is the new Managing Editor, in addition to her work as the Fiction Editor. These changes should enable us to run the operations side of the magazine more smoothly and bring you, the reader, a higher caliber publication.

More good news: we've received overwhelming critical attention during the last few weeks. Last month PifMagazine.com was ranked number sixteen in Writer's Digest's "50 Best Markets for Short Stories" (June 2000). Writer's Digest commended Pif as "a showcase for quality poetry and short fiction by new and emerging writers." Also, in its Best of the Web issue (May 2000), Writer's Digest recognized Pilot-Search.com as being among the best and most useful literary search engines. Writer's Digest emphasized Pilot-Search's "more than 11,000 writing links," applauding its variety of categories "from anthologies to zines, views and MFA programs." Read more about the press we're receiving.

Pif is looking forward to publishing several good issues this fall, including a Science Issue and an Out of Print Books Issue. Correspondingly, we need submissions. In particular, we need:

  • Memoirs - especially for September's Science issue
  • Opinion Essay by an agent or publisher on why books go
out of print for October's Out-of-Print issue
  • Interview with a scientist or technologist
  • Interview with Denis Johnson regarding his upcoming
novel and the movie release of Jesus' Son
  • Interview with Joy Williams regarding her long awaited
novel, The Quick and The Dead, that will be released
    in December
  • Fiction and Poetry for September's Science Issue (this
does not mean science fiction — we're still more interested
in character and form than plot)
  • Hypertexts (fiction, poetry, etc.)
  • Animated cover art (GIF, JPEG, Flash, etc.), especially for
    the Science and Out-of-Print issues
  • Commentary that uses hyperlinks, audio, and video
  • Interview with George Saunders regarding science and technology in his writing (for the Sept Science issue)
  • Interview with Annie Dillard regarding science and technology in her writing (for the Sept Science issue)

For details on how to submit, see our Submissions Page.

Now, grab a cup of your favorite blend, and enjoy this issue of Pif.
