Fascinating interview! It's inspiring to read about a conversion experience to poetry at a reading. It makes sense to me that the dynamism of a poetry reading would win someone over by bringing the poetry to life, particularly someone who, like Beban, is interested in myth and oral culture. It's also interesting to read about the poetry scene in L.A. The scene sounds vibrant, and I'm glad to read about that! I attended a very successful poetry reading in L.A. a few years ago of up-and-coming poets, which I was reminded of by reading this interview. I had some epiphanies at that reading, too, like how humor can be used to poignant ends in some poems. Wonderful interview. Thanks to you both (Beban and Alger) for taking the time and for sharing it with us!
