Another fascinating interview, Derek-you do know the most interesting people! If Charles S. writes half as well as he talks and lives his books are worth seeking out. The interviews I have read so far are pitched to harmoniously engage writer and reader with you sitting back to wonder at it all. I liked the suggestion made by alangettis below-regarding a further collaboration between the two of you...

Terrific interview. It's amazing how many twists and turns his life took, but they all kept him writing. <br>A book about draft dodging teachers sounds interesting. Any plans for that?

Charles is an old friend but he never tells me half this stuff. Terrific piece. Similar sophisticated, witty voice in "Swann's Last Song" and it's good to see it again in print here. One of the city's best writers and writer/teachers and it's good to see him get some play in Pif.

Wonderful interview, guys! Charles speaks eloquently and naturally about how it happens--a kid buries himself in books (sometimes to avoid homework, sometimes to avoid a war), then finds his way into a literary career. I'm impressed by both the quality and quantity of the details with which Charles recounts the chronology of his career as a writer and teacher. It helps, of course, to be prompted by good questions. I'll pass this on to my own writing students. Derek and Charles: Thanks to you both!

Marvelous interview with such an influential writer. I marvel at how someone who doesn't necessarily come from a literacy-based childhood can develop such a love for books. As a budding elementary-school teacher, I want to pass on my passion for books to my young students, but it pleases me that one can develop this passion alone. I also admire how Mr. Salzberg sort-of fell into teaching, which is exactly what happened to me during my graduate studies with the Creative Writing program at Wilkes University. Many of my classmates were teachers, and my love for books and education made me realize that perhaps I should become a teacher. I'm on my way, but I wish that I could've had Mr. Salzberg as a teacher. I had no idea that one of his students was Lauren Weisberger. I'm also from the Lehigh Valley area, and I sure do admire her successes. But Mr. Salzberg is an inspiration to not give up on writing. Thank you for a wonderful article, Mr. Alger!

Terrific interview! I can hear Charles talking and telling me things I want to hear. He's a sophisticated guy who's been around the ballpark (literally at times) and his lively personality that blessedly doesn't take himself all that seriously shines through. We need to hear more from writers who are actively committed to this shaky way of life and struggle through to good results. Bravo, Derek Alger!

I loved this interview. I think Derek Alger pulled a Charles Salzberg. He unobtrusively asked great questions and got the celebrity to talk freely. Salzberg comes off as a fascinating character steeped in the New York literary landscape. I wouldn't mind seeing Alger and Salzberg collaborate on a biography of Salzberg's life. There is a book length story to be told!

I've known and admired Charles for years, but I didn't know about a lot of this stuff -- Sigmund Freud in the Rexall Drug Store, Ron Rector, Law School (!!!). The interview reveals the singularity of Charles's vision: to write. Wonderful stuff, and a wonderful portrait of NYC in earlier times. Well done, Mr Alger.
