What a smart, beautiful, complex-in-all-the-right-ways piece. Too often, when humans write about animals, they resort to the expected (cute) epiphanies and overdoses of anthropomorphic schmaltz. But this is tough, rich, honest, and immeasurably compassionate essay not just about dog love but about love for fellow humans and for the messy, imperfect world we all share. Brava, Anna Monardo! This is one of the best things I've read in awhile.

Although I debate whether Shih-Tzu's qualify as dogs, this is a moving dog story. It's also a moving mid-life story, marriage story, writer's story, and a whole bunch else. Thanks, Ms Monardo, and Pif.
