True North : Page 1, 2 As far as the old-fashioned words go, there are some delicious poetic moments in True North. "Hag of Beare, or The Calendar Girl", uses marvelous, resonant imagery of witches, tarot, cups and brooms and geese. "Narrowness of Narrow Path Endured" asks, "Can we be compassed by thought?," tying together her map theme, her direction theme, her nature-of-consciousness theme. More on the nature of consciousness, and language; in "Linguisticuffs," she writes, "Now for a theory // of language, what can / be said is more important than / what is." In the end, though, the delicious poetic moments are outweighed by my sense of frustration. My copy of True North sits now on a zip disk, where I suspect it will stay for a while, but I don't intend to read it much again. Next time I'm in a library I might pick up the print edition, to see how they differ; maybe on the page the words will keep me drawn in. For now, though, I'm letting Strickland's words go. Maybe in someone else's eyes, on someone else's monitor, they'll have the direction they seek. Tell us what you think. She has a poetic license, in the form of an MFA from the Bennington Writing Seminars, and she isn't afraid to use it. When not writing, she sings alto, bakes a lot of bread, and plays with her cat.
