PAST POETRY MORE POETRY

It's like you got up late again and climb
inside your marriage. The starter throbs,
the doo-dad's shot. You've got to want to
get there like crazy and not care when you do.
It dawns on you, the dog in the distance
isn't Eternity's - it's Eternity Junior's.
He's scratching fleas, counts them wrong
each time. Start over. It's way
too hot plus you're fat. Start over.

But then you sit there like some slumped prophet,
smirking as you sweep your arm to prove
the promised land is there, across
the final hill. As we hump it out I knew
when I glanced back I'd see you humming, fixing
the broken fountain where we'd been
with you, drinking dirty water all along.
