Nick Flynn’s poem, "Listenerland" (Painted Bride Quarterly) Kay Sundstrom’s short story, "The Dentist Chair" (The Blue Moon Review) Peter Davison’s poem, "These
Days" Mary-Beth Hughes’ short story, "Israel" (Ploughshares) Rachel Chambers’ hypertext, "beyond broken bay" (fray.com)
Here’s a short list of what I consider to be the best e-books, hypertexts, and print books expected to be released by publishers in the spring months of 2000. Please keep in mind that book release dates are nebulous. These books may already be on bookstore shelves, or they may not be out until August. Enjoy! In December, Grove Press released cheap, paperback, pocket-sized editions of several King James Version books of the Bible. Each edition includes a personal introduction by a noteworthy author, poet, or artist. I love the insight this series gives on the mindset of the introducers!
Blakely, Diann: Farewell, My Lovelies (Consortium). This poet’s second collection. Doty, Mark: Turtle,
Swan, and Bethlehem in Broad Daylight : Two Volumes of Poetry
(University of Illinois Press). Poetry that is gritty, hopeful, cautionary,
sexy. No one else writes about loss like this.
Earley, Tony: Jim the Boy (Little Brown and Co.). Debut novel from the author of Here We Are in Paradise: Stories. One of my favorite Southerner writers. Tony’s provocative essays can be found in The New Yorker and The Oxford American. Joyce, Michael: Twilight: a symphony (Eastgate Systems). This profound new hypertext from the author of afternoon: a story is only available for Macs at present, but a PC version will soon be released.
Michaels, Anne: Poems: The Weight of Oranges, Miner's Pond, Skin Divers (Knopf). This trilogy is grounded in deep emotional truth and yearning that skirt the games poetry often wants to play with its readers. This collection shoots straight and piercing as it tells stories, examines historical figures, and meditates on memory. O’Brien, Edna: Wild Decembers: A Novel (Houghton Mifflin). O’Brien’s
latest. She teaches us again how to use place in our writing as she charts
the stormy relations of an Irish family: Prose, Francine: Blue Angel (HarperCollins). Check out the latest from the award-winning author of Guided Tours of Hell: Novellas, Bigfoot Dreams, and Household Saints. Strand, Mark: The Weather of Words: Poetic Invention (Knopf). Essays on the nature of art and poetry from the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet. Eclectic collection of subjects discussed, like the relationship between modern poetry and photography. Tangherlini, Arne: Leo@fergusrules.com (Leapfrog Press). Available in print and in Rocket e-Book format. "Alice in Cyberland! A brilliant and engaging first novel with uncommon energy and sophistication." -John Barth Tell us what you think. Email
