Transcendental Friend : Page 1, 2

"Giraffe" exemplifies the sort of poems readers will find throughout TF –idiosyncratic, richly imaginative, strong-voiced – just about every one a shimmering gem. Others includes the wonderful poems by Hoa Nguyen and Jo Ann Wasserman (also in "The Bestiary") and the selections from Romanian poet Carmen Firan (translations by Exquisite Corpse's Andrei Codrescu and Symphony Space Creative Director Isaiah Sheffer), and Chinese poet Zhai Yongming in the current issue's "Report from the Field."

Along with contemporary material, TF also features some intriguing historical nuggets. Check out the five early poems by proto-Dadaist Tristan Tzara in the current "Idiosyncratica" and the translations of work by Antonin Artaud and Paul Celan in past issues.

All of this makes Transcendental Friend a necessary and instructional read, particularly for those interested in discovering writers from Eastern Europe and Asia who, while they may have considerable currency in their homelands (as in the case of Yongming, for instance), have yet to attract a wider audience here in the States.

(A final note to would-be contributors: as with some of the other "A-List" 'zines on the Web (Alsop Review and Jacket spring to mind), Transcendental Friend is run largely "by-invitation-only." Before submitting, visit the site and read the list of "open" sections, then query Kalleberg with a proposal.)
