All in all, you’re not going to have much luck trying to snoop out the
best erotica markets in your dog-eared copy of Writer’s
Market. The best bet for many of us has been to sell to as many
anthologies as possible, whose calls are often mailed around through an
incestuous network of writers and publishers.
Get yourself published in a couple of online or print erotica magazines,
like Scarlet
Letters, Zaftig!,
CleanSheets,
or Libido, and tap into the network of writers there. Make a note
to your publisher that you would like to be kept abreast (as it were)
of submission calls.
The good markets for erotica and sexuality are often good on one level
and poor on another. An excellent place to be seen, or a venue that allows you to keep your
rights will likely pay little to nothing. On the
other hand, a gig that'll pad your wallet can often strip you of your
rights, or be the kind of place you don't want to include in your clips
or even have your name seen in.
If you really want the best of all worlds, in my advice, keep your day
job, or grab a job in the publishing end. Balance your erotica freelance
work with non-adult writing. When erotica and sexuality writing freelance
are not your central income, it will open you up to taking only the best
opportunities and allow you to build your career slow and steady. In time,
when you hone your craft and choose where you publish carefully, you will
find that the better opportunities open themselves up to you, both in
terms of income, quality of publication and your own professional reputation.

Want a taste of what it's like in a mainstream pornography market?
At Penthouse, though they do not buy much material freelance,
what they do buy, they pay very handsomely for. For instance, if you can
write up to 2000 words on an incredible feat, endeavor or little-known
fact about the penis, you could net $1,500. Better still, think of some
feature or interview they just have to have and you are looking
at up to 5K. For fiction, don't call them, they'll call you. Of course,
it still pays better in mainstream to be a centerfold and you can
save on toner cartridges.
