while I was out walking the beartooth pass
a few switchbacks beyond the road closed barricade
decorated with bullet holes and avalanche warnings

while the wide eyed deer I almost smashed
south of red lodge
flashed passed the car &
that homemade bridge up on trail number eight
of mismatched wooden slats rusty nails & two gnarly trees
held firm through snowmelt torrents
young whitetails stroll through the yard at dusk
light snow at moon rise
stars burn through towards dawn
